Today we’re proud to show you the newest update to the WebFaction control panel. We’ve upgraded the way you create and manage MySQL and PostgreSQL databases and users, as a part of our ongoing effort to make the control panel easier to use. We’ve made this two-minute video to show off how the new interface works:

New websites interface

Posted in Control panel by

Today we’re proud to unveil a new development in our control panel: an improved websites interface. As a part of our ongoing effort to make the control panel better and easier to use, we’ve revised the tool you use to assemble websites out of domains and applications. Now you can add a new domain name, install a new app, and create a new website all in one place; there’s no need to navigate to several different pages.

We’ve created this introductory tutorial video to give you a quick tour:

Of course, the control panel isn’t the only way to manage your websites. Our API can be used to automate the process of creating websites and applications, if you anticipate making sites in bulk.

Let us know what you think in the comments and, if you need any help, join us in the Q&A Community.

World IPv6 Launch day

Posted in Control panel by

As you may have heard today is World IPv6 Launch day. A lot of companies around the world have worked hard to be IPv6-ready by today. The world is running out of IPv4 addresses and the solution is the new IPv6 protocol.

I’m happy to say that IPv6 is now supported throughout our various systems:

  • Our sites http://www.webfaction.com and https://my.webfaction.com have been available over IPv6 for some time
  • All of our Centos6 servers (web300 and over) and a subset of our Centos5 servers have IPv6 enabled. On these servers various services such as MySql, Postgresql, phpMyAdmin and phpPgAdmin are available over IPv6.
  • Our control panel now lets you specify whether you want a particular site available over IPv4 only, IPv6 only or both:

    IPv4/IPv6 choice
Note that this option is only available if you’re on an IPv6-enabled server. If you don’t see this option and you want to enable IPv6 for your sites open a support ticket and we’ll enable IPv6 on your server.

  • Our control panel now lets you create custom AAAA DNS records for your domains:

IPv6 provides 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses so we should be OK for a while…

New email management interface

Posted in Control panel by

We’ve been working hard on making our control panel easier to use and today we’ve released a new email management interface.
The new interface allows you to manage your emails from a single screen, even if you need to create new domains and mailboxes.
You can save your emails to local mailboxes, forward them to other email addresses, set up an autoresponder or send your emails to a script written by you for automated processing.
A video speaks a thousand pictures so here is how you create an email address (including a new domain and mailbox) in a few clicks with the new interface:

As a reminder the control panel isn’t the only way to manage your email addresses. Our API lets you automate the process and if you have tons of email addresses you’ll be thankful for it!

We’d love to hear your feedback or suggestions for improvements so let us know in the comments or using the “Feedback” button in the panel.

Introducing the first feature of our new control panel

Posted in Control panel by

One of the things that separates WebFaction hosting from run-of-the-mill hosting is our control panel. It’s the center of the WebFaction experience because it ties together all the parts of your WebFaction account in a powerful way. But we’ve also heard a lot of feedback about how the control panel might serve your needs better.

In recent months we’ve been laying the foundation for a new version of the WebFaction control panel, a foundation on which we can quickly improve and add new features. Today we’re proud to unveil the first feature of our new control panel: a new domain management interface. You can try it out at https://my.webfaction.com.

WebFaction control panel screenshotWe have a few major goals in mind while developing this new control panel. Most importantly, we want to make your most common tasks easier and quicker to do while maintaining the flexibility our control panel is known for. With such changes, we hope to make the control panel more friendly to new users and to infrequent users. While we’re at it, we want to refresh the appearance of the control panel, so that it looks as modern as its functionality.

But we can’t do it without your help. During this beta testing period, we want you to try out the new control panel and use this opportunity to share your feedback. You can report problems or make suggestions at any time with the built-in Feedback tab on the left side of the control panel. We can’t wait to hear what you think (and fix the bugs you discover).

And if something isn’t quite right, don’t worry: the control panel you’re used to will continue to be available at https://panel.webfaction.com/ while we bring you this new control panel. At any time you can switch between the traditional and beta control panels to manage your account.

Finally, thank you for taking the time to try out the control panel and provide your feedback. WebFaction hosting just wouldn’t be the same without your support.
