Thanks to Ian Holsman, we now have a screencast showing how to install a real-life Rails application (Typo) on our servers. Check it out here.

Good job mister Ian. The only thing that I would have done differently in production is set Apache to serve the static content in the public directory. Also, the link to the screencast is a bit off.

Movie appears corrupted. Error message "Couldn't open the file "rails-typo-screencast.mov" because a bad public movie atom was found in the movie."

That happens when you try to stream the video and the video hasn't finished downloading before Apache timed out. If you download the video instead of streaming it you shouldn't receive the error.

Downloaded the entire movie -- all 23,490 KB of it -- and am still getting the error.

Have downloaded it again and it is now up to 23.0 MB (24,052,885 bytes). And still not working. :(

I'm not sure what the problem is, it seems QuickTime is moody.

A few other people have reported similar problems and a while back there was a discussion about this on http://www.apple.com/ but it seems to have been deleted. A few other people have experienced the same problem with our screencasts but if you search Google you will see that it's a common problem with no apparent solution.

If you come across a server side solution we'll do what we can to fix the problem but until then we'll just have to make our screencasts available in more reliable formats. (This screencast is old, our recent screencasts are available in Flash, OGG, and Quicktime.

That's too bad. I was really looking forward to this particular screencast. Any suggestions as to where I might find this information elsewhere?

Never mind. Loaded it on a different system and it worked fine. :)

Can you think of anything which would prevent the video from working on one of your computers but not the other? Very strange... :/

MrLipid said on 2007-08-29 22:21:31:
Most likely the version of QuickTime. It likes 7 but not 6.5. Plus, the system it played on has just been reformatted and given a fresh install of XP Media Center. Not a lot of dust bunnies in the Registry.

I'm not sure, we've tested different QuickTime versions on Mac OS and Windows without finding anything definitive.

Thanks for the information. :)

Definitive? Apple? QuickTime? Windows?

As a PC gamer for years, I have long since given up any hope of sorting out the mysteries of QuickTime. :)

Once I got it to play, I found the screencast very useful.

There are few things in the world of computing as mysterious as QuickTime. Fortunately, using WebFaction with Rails is not in the least mysterious. :)
